Getting Your Minnesota Home Ready for Winter Power Outages
Minnesota winters bring ice storms, heavy snow, and wind that can knock out power for hours or days. When it is 20 below zero outside, a power outage is not just an inconvenience. It is a safety emergency. Your furnace stops. Your pipes can freeze. Your house temperature drops fast. Here is how to prepare so a blackout does not turn into a disaster.
The biggest risk: frozen pipes
When the power goes out, the furnace stops. In extreme cold, the temperature inside your home drops about 1 to 2 degrees per hour in a well-insulated house. In an older or poorly insulated home, it drops faster.
Once the indoor temperature hits the low 30s, pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces, and unheated areas start to freeze. A frozen pipe that bursts can flood your basement or main floor and cause thousands of dollars in water damage.
How to protect your pipes if the power goes out:
Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air reach the pipes. Let faucets drip slowly. Moving water is harder to freeze. If you have to leave the home, shut off the main water supply and drain the system. Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it.
Option 1: A portable generator
A portable generator can power essential devices during a short outage. You run extension cords from the generator to the furnace, fridge, sump pump, and a few lights.
Pros: Affordable ($500 to $2,000). Good for short outages. Easy to store in a garage or shed.
Cons: You have to start it manually and refuel it. It runs outside only (carbon monoxide is deadly in enclosed spaces). It does not power the whole house. Extension cords across the floor are a trip hazard.
Safety rules for portable generators: Always run the generator outside, at least 20 feet from any door, window, or vent. Never run it in a garage, even with the door open. Use heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use. Do not plug a portable generator into a wall outlet or your panel (this is called backfeeding and can kill utility workers).
Option 2: A standby generator
A standby (whole-house) generator is permanently installed outside your home. It connects to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. When the power goes out, it starts automatically within seconds and powers your entire home until the power comes back.
Pros: Fully automatic. Powers everything. Runs on natural gas or propane, so no refueling. Seamless: you might not even notice the power went out.
Cons: Higher cost ($5,000 to $15,000 installed). Requires professional installation. Needs annual maintenance.
For homes in areas that experience regular winter outages, a standby generator is the best investment you can make. It protects your pipes, your sump pump, your food, and your family.
Option 3: A battery backup system
Home battery systems (like Tesla Powerwall or Enphase) store electricity and release it when the grid goes down. If you have solar panels, the battery can recharge from solar during the day and power the home at night.
Pros: Silent. No fuel needed. Pairs well with solar. Qualifies for federal tax credits.
Cons: Limited capacity. A single battery may only power essential circuits for 8 to 12 hours. Multiple batteries increase capacity but also increase cost ($10,000 to $20,000 per battery). Not ideal as the sole backup for extended outages in extreme cold.
Batteries work best as a complement to solar or as backup for short outages. For multi-day winter outages, a generator is more reliable.
Prepare your home now
Here are steps you can take before winter to be ready for an outage:
Insulate well. A well-insulated home holds heat much longer during an outage. Attic insulation, wall insulation, and sealed air leaks all help. The longer the house stays warm, the more time you have before pipes freeze.
Check your heating system's wiring. Your heat needs power to run. Before winter, have an electrician look at the wiring, the connections, and the circuit your heating system runs on. When the wiring is solid, your heat is ready to run the moment power comes back.
Get a carbon monoxide detector. If you use a portable generator, a gas stove, or any combustion device during an outage, a CO detector is essential. CO is odorless and kills.
Keep flashlights and batteries on hand. Do not rely on candles. Candles cause house fires. LED flashlights and lanterns are safer and brighter.
Fill your car's gas tank. During a widespread outage, gas stations may not be able to pump fuel. A full tank gives you heat (running the car in the driveway with the windows cracked for ventilation) and the ability to leave if needed.
Have a plan for your sump pump. If your basement has a sump pump, a power outage during a thaw can mean a flood. A battery-backed sump pump or a generator keeps it running.
Know your utility's outage map. Most utilities have an online outage map that shows affected areas and estimated restoration times. Check it during an outage to stay informed.
Get a generator installed before winter
Do not wait until the first storm. Generator demand spikes every fall and winter, and lead times can stretch to weeks. Planning ahead means your standby generator is installed, tested, and ready before the cold hits.
