How a standby generator works

A standby generator sits outside your home, usually on a concrete pad next to the house. It is connected to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch (ATS).

When the power goes out, the ATS detects the loss within seconds. It disconnects your home from the utility grid (to protect utility workers and prevent backfeed) and starts the generator. The generator powers up and begins feeding electricity to your home. The whole process takes about 10 to 30 seconds.

When utility power comes back, the ATS detects it, switches the home back to grid power, and shuts down the generator. All of this happens automatically. You do not have to go outside, run extension cords, or flip switches.

What size do you need?

Generators are sized in kilowatts (kW). The right size depends on what you want to power.

Essential circuits only (12 to 16 kW). This covers the furnace, the fridge, the sump pump, some lights, and a few outlets. It keeps the house safe and livable but does not power everything. The AC, electric dryer, and oven would stay off during an outage.

Whole-house coverage (20 to 26 kW). This powers everything, including the AC, electric range, dryer, and hot water heater. You would not even know the power was out. This is the most popular choice for homes that want full backup.

Large homes or heavy loads (30+ kW). Homes with large square footage, electric heat, workshops, or multiple AC zones may need a larger unit.

An electrician can calculate your home's load and recommend the right size. Oversizing wastes money on equipment. Undersizing means the generator cannot keep up and may shut down under load.

What it costs

Exercise cycle. Standby generators run automatically once a week for a short period to keep the engine lubricated and the battery charged. You will hear it start up and run for about 10 to 15 minutes. This is normal and necessary.

Is it worth it?
