Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping? A Becker Electrician Explains
A tripping breaker is annoying, but it is also doing its job. Breakers trip to prevent wires from overheating, which prevents electrical fires. When a breaker trips, something is drawing more power than the circuit can safely handle. We see a lot of this in older Becker homes in winter, when space heaters, block heaters, and holiday loads all pile onto circuits that were sized decades ago. Here are the most common causes and what to do about each one.
1. Overloaded circuit
This is the most common cause. You have too many things plugged into one circuit, and the total draw exceeds the breaker's rating. A typical residential circuit is 15 or 20 amps. A space heater alone can draw 12 to 15 amps. Add a hair dryer or a vacuum and the circuit cannot handle it.
How to tell: The breaker trips when you turn on a specific appliance, especially in combination with other devices on the same circuit.
What to do: Unplug some devices from that circuit. Move high-draw appliances to different circuits. If overloading happens regularly, the home may need additional circuits or a 200-amp panel upgrade to distribute the load better.
2. Short circuit
A short circuit happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire or a ground wire. This creates a sudden surge of current that instantly trips the breaker. Short circuits can happen inside an appliance, inside a wall, or in an outlet or switch.
How to tell: The breaker trips immediately when you turn on a specific appliance or flip a specific switch. You may see a spark or smell burning plastic. The breaker may be hard to reset or trip again right away.
What to do: If it happens with one appliance, unplug it and try the breaker. If the breaker holds, the problem is the appliance. If it trips without anything plugged in, the short is in the wiring. Call an electrician. Short circuits are a fire hazard.
3. Ground fault
A ground fault is similar to a short circuit, but the hot wire touches a grounded metal surface (like a junction box or an appliance casing) instead of the neutral wire. Ground faults are especially dangerous in wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces because water conducts electricity.
How to tell: A GFCI outlet trips (the one with the test and reset buttons). Or a GFCI breaker in the panel trips. These are designed to detect ground faults and cut power in milliseconds.
What to do: Press the reset button on the GFCI outlet. If it trips again immediately, there is a ground fault in the circuit. This could be a damaged appliance, a wet outlet, or a wiring issue. Unplug everything on the circuit and try resetting. If it holds, plug items back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it keeps tripping with nothing plugged in, call an electrician.
4. Arc fault
An arc fault happens when a wire connection is loose and electricity jumps (arcs) across the gap. This creates intense heat at the arc point. Arc faults are a leading cause of home electrical fires.
How to tell: An AFCI breaker (arc-fault circuit interrupter) trips. These breakers are required by code in bedrooms and living areas in newer homes. They detect the unique electrical signature of an arc and trip before a fire can start.
What to do: An AFCI breaker that trips repeatedly means there is an arcing connection somewhere on the circuit. This could be a loose wire at an outlet, a damaged cord, or a nail through a wire in the wall. Call an electrician to find and fix the source.
5. Faulty breaker
Breakers wear out over time. A breaker that has tripped hundreds of times may no longer hold properly and trip at loads below its rating. This is less common than the other causes, but it does happen, especially in older panels.
How to tell: The breaker trips at seemingly random times, even with light loads. Nothing else explains it.
What to do: An electrician can test the breaker with a clamp meter to see if it is tripping at the correct amperage. If the breaker is faulty, replacing it is a quick and inexpensive fix.
When to call an electrician
Some breaker issues are simple overloads that you can fix by unplugging things. Others are serious hazards. Call an electrician if:
The breaker trips with nothing plugged in. You see sparks or burn marks at an outlet, switch, or the panel. You smell burning plastic or something hot near wiring. A breaker will not stay reset. Multiple breakers trip at the same time. You feel a tingle or shock when touching an appliance or outlet.
These are all signs of a wiring problem that needs professional attention. Ignoring them puts your home at risk.
Do not just upsize the breaker
One thing homeowners sometimes try is replacing a 15-amp breaker with a 20-amp breaker to stop the tripping. This is dangerous. The breaker is sized to match the wire gauge. A 15-amp breaker protects 14-gauge wire. Putting a 20-amp breaker on 14-gauge wire lets the wire carry more current than it is rated for, which can overheat the wire and start a fire. Never upsize a breaker without also upgrading the wire.
