Installing an EV Charger at Home: What Becker Drivers Should Know

More people around Becker and central Minnesota are driving electric every year. If you own an EV, the easiest way to keep it charged is right in your own garage. You plug in at night and wake up full. No public chargers, no waiting around. But a fast home charger is real electrical work, not a plug-and-go job. Level 1 vs. Level 2

Your EV comes with a basic Level 1 cord that plugs into a normal wall outlet. It only adds about 3 to 5 miles of range an hour. For most drivers that is too slow, and it gets worse in winter when cold cuts your range.

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind your electric dryer uses. It adds about 25 to 30 miles of range an hour, so an overnight charge fills the car by morning. That is the setup most Becker EV owners want.

Why we check your panel first

Here is the step a lot of folks skip. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit pulling 40 to 50 amps. That is a big load. Before we run a single wire, we look at your panel to see if it has room.

Many newer homes with a 200-amp panel are fine. A lot of older Becker homes still run a 100-amp panel, and those are often full already. If yours cannot take the extra load, we tell you straight, before you spend a dime, and we can upgrade the panel at the same time.

What we do on install day

Tim does the work himself. We run a new circuit from your panel to where you park, mount the charger, and set the breaker to match the unit. Then we test it so you know it works before we leave. On rural acreage, we can run the charger out to a detached or heated garage, which is common out here.

What it costs

As of 2026, a Level 2 charger install around Becker usually runs about $800 to $2,500, not counting the charger itself. Most home chargers cost another $400 to $800. The biggest thing that moves the price is how far your parking spot is from the panel. A charger right next to the panel is the cheap end. Charging through a Minnesota winter

Cold is hard on EVs. Below zero, your range drops and the car burns power just to warm the battery and the cabin. A car that starts the day in a warmer garage holds more range. If you park outside, we use a unit rated for our winters and seal it up right.

A few things to decide

• Charger size. A 40-amp charger suits most homes. A 48-amp unit charges faster but needs a bigger circuit. We size it to your car and your panel.
• Smart features. Some chargers connect to Wi-Fi so you can set them to run overnight on cheaper off-peak power. Ask your electric utility about time-of-use rates.
• A second car later. If another EV might be coming, tell us now. We can size the panel and plan the wiring so adding a second charger later is cheap and simple.
